FOR NP JOBSEEKERS IN PRIMARY CARE
Find Out What the Job Actually Pays Before You Sign
Your salary is one number. What you earn per hour is a different one, and it drops every time the charting and the inbox follow you home. The Offer and Contract Decision Kit gives you what you need to read the whole offer yourself: how to find what the job really pays once that work is counted, how to recognize the clauses that cost the most, and how to decide whether to accept, negotiate, or walk away.
THE OFFER IN FRONT OF YOU
The Salary Is the Part You Can Read. The Contract Is the Part That Decides.
The salary looks fine. That is the problem. You are at the table with the offer open in front of you, the number at the top is reasonable, maybe even good, and everything under it is page after page of language no one ever taught you to read. So you check the salary, the salary checks out, and a question you cannot answer sits underneath it: what is the rest of this going to cost me? Because the salary is one line. The contract is what decides how many hours that line has to cover, what it costs you to leave, and what follows you out the door when you go.
And you have nothing to compare it to. Maybe this is your first contract, or you came from shift work where the job was the job and the paperwork was a formality you signed at orientation. So you ask the going rate in a group of strangers in a Facebook group and still cannot tell whether the offer in front of you is good or just loud.
Here is the part underneath even that. The salary is not the same as what you earn per hour. As an exempt salaried provider, the salary covers the role no matter how many hours it takes, and no overtime begins at hour 41, so every hour of charting and inbox that lands after the schedule quietly lowers what each hour actually pays. The number that should decide this is the one almost no one calculates.

IF THIS IS YOU
You Could Be Any of These People
The New Grad with a First Offer
You have an offer you are genuinely glad to have, and a recruiter waiting on a yes, and you do not want to look difficult before day one by asking questions.
The Escapee Who Won't Go Through It Again
You have done this before. You know exactly what a job that takes your evenings and weekends feels like, and you are determined not to sign your way into another one.
The One With Too Many Choices
You have more than one offer, the salary numbers look close, and you cannot tell which job is actually the better one.
The One Who Got Tapped
Someone reached out and offered you something you were not even looking for, and a flattering offer is a hard thing to read with a cold eye.
Whatever brought you here, you are standing in the same place: an offer that reads fine on the surface, a few days to decide, and no clear way to see what it is really going to cost you. That is not knowledge you were supposed to have already. It is a decision no one ever taught you to make, and it is the decision this kit prepares you for.

WHY READING IT HARDER DOESN'T HELP
You Cannot Spot What You Were Never Taught to See
You have probably tried to close this gap the obvious ways.
None of it answers the question you actually have, because each one answers a different question. The AI tells you what the contract says, not what it will cost you. The group tells you what happened to other people in other states. And "standard" is not a legal category, it is a sentence recruiters use to move you past a clause, because a term that shows up in many contracts is still fully enforceable against you.
What you are missing is not effort. It is the one thing you were never trained to do: read the document for what it does to you specifically. The open-ended hours line that thins your real rate. The schedule defined "as the employer determines," which is how the job you signed for quietly becomes a different job by spring. You can only ask better questions than hope once you know which lines to slow down on, and that is what the kit teaches you to do.
And some of what you find is not about you at all. If the job is built to require far more than a real workweek, the math is set before your first day. Your effective hourly rate, what the salary comes to once every hour the job truly takes is counted, erodes by design, and no amount of getting faster changes that. Seeing it on the page is how you stop blaming yourself for a number the job already decided.
OPEN THE KIT
A Field Guide and the Tools You Read Your Offer With
The kit is a field guide and a set of tools you use on your own offer. With it, you go from a stack of paper you are not sure how to read to a decision you can explain. Here is what each part is for.
You use it on the offer in front of you now, and again on the next contract anyone hands you.
The Contract Clause Field Guide
This is the reference that makes the decision possible. It explains every clause you will meet in a nurse practitioner contract the same way: what it is, why it matters, and exactly what to ask for. You already half-know the famous one, the restrictive covenant. It also covers the quieter clauses that reach your own money, the ones almost no checklist warns you about and most people never think to question until it is too late. And it does all of this across the settings these offers come from, private practice, hospital-employed, FQHC, and more, with the malpractice coverage analysis handled for each. So when you sit down with your own offer, the clauses you would most likely overlook become the ones you can spot, understand, and name.
The Effective Hourly Rate Calculator and Spillover Hours Estimator
Your salary covers the role no matter how many hours it takes, so the longer the work runs past your scheduled day, the less each hour is really worth. You enter the figures it asks for, and you get what the job actually pays per hour once the real hours are counted, the work that follows you home included. That number, not the salary on the page, is the one that belongs in your decision.
The Spillover Hours Estimator
The calculator is only as honest as the hours you feed it, and most people guess low. This breaks the after-hours and uncompensated time into where it actually comes from, so you arrive at a real number instead of a hopeful one, and the rate you calculate reflects the job you would actually be working.
The Offer Decode Worksheet
Everything in one place. You use it to pull every term out of the offer and onto a single page, so you are working from the whole agreement instead of only the parts that caught your eye. It prompts you for the things that are easy to miss in the moment too, like where your credentialing stands and the benefits that phase in over months or years instead of starting on day one.
Normal Hard, or a Job That Will Not Get Better
A short section for the question almost everyone asks too late: is this just a hard first year, or a job that is not going to improve? It lays out the difference, so you can tell the normal learning curve every new provider goes through from a job that is built in a way time and effort will not fix.
The Red Flag Quick-Reference
The fast scan. One page of the clauses worth slowing down for, plus the short list of the few that are reason enough on their own to walk away. You keep it next to your offer and check as you go.
The Accept, Negotiate, or Decline Triage Sheet
The decision. You bring everything you found and work it into a clear call: sign it, ask for changes first, or pass. The stack of paper becomes a choice you can stand behind and say out loud why.
How to Hire a Contract Attorney
This kit does not replace a lawyer, and it does not pretend to. It makes you a sharper one to work with. It shows you the line where a clause is worth a professional read, how to find someone who actually knows nurse practitioner contracts, how to vet them on a short call, what a flat fee should cover versus an hourly review, and what to send so the review is worth what you pay for it. You walk in prepared, so the hour you buy costs less and does more.
The Walkthrough Video
Watch the whole method worked on a sample offer, start to finish. The same sample is read two ways, as a private practice role and as an FQHC, so you can see how the malpractice coverage analysis changes with the setting before you sit down with your own.

WHO BUILT THIS
Written by Someone Who Has Read These From the Inside
I am Candice Elam, DNP, FNP-C, Afamily nurse practitioner working full-time in primary care at a federally qualified health center in New York City. I have sat across the table for more than a dozen of these interviews, across private practices, government-run clinics, and community-based health centers, and I have turned down more jobs than I have accepted.
Declining an interview, an offer, or a single clause is a decision you are allowed to make, and I have made it many times. I also built this kit because I have been on the wrong side of one of these contracts. I accepted an offer once, gave notice at my old job, severed completely, and did not get the actual contract until my first day at the new one. When I finally read it, it was unacceptable, and I had already closed the door behind me. I chose to walk away from this bad deal and be unexpectedly unemployed rather than sign it.
That is the exact moment this kit exists to prevent: reading the real document too late, with no leverage left. I read these contracts as a working nurse practitioner, not as a lawyer, and that is precisely what the kit equips you to do. NP to NP, in plain English, before you sign.
WHAT CHANGES
What to Expect
Here is what is different the afternoon you sit down with the kit and your offer.

BEFORE YOU DECIDE
This Kit Is for You. This Kit Is Not.
A short gut check before the price, so you buy this only if it is built for where you are.
This kit is for you if
You have an offer or a contract in hand, or you expect one soon, and you have not signed yet.
You are in primary care or heading into it: private practice, hospital-employed, an FQHC, or a cash-pay wellness role.
This is your first contract and you have no reference point for what is normal.
You have been burned by a job before and you are not willing to let that happen again.
You have more than one offer and you cannot tell which one is actually better.
You would rather spend an afternoon reading it now than find the costly clause in year two.
This kit is not for you if
You have already signed. This one is built for the window before your signature, when you still hold leverage. If you have already started the job, the Once You’re In Kit is the better fit.
You want someone to read the contract for you and tell you what to do. The kit prepares you to read it yourself; it is not a done-for-you review.
You want legal advice or an attorney's opinion. This is information, not legal advice.
You want a guarantee of a particular salary or negotiation result. The kit prepares you to make the read; it does not promise a result.
BEFORE YOU BUY
Frequently Asked Questions
The questions below cover what NPs ask before they buy the kit. If your question isn't here, email support@SignTheChart.com before you purchase and we'll help you decide whether the kit meets your needs.
Couldn't I just run my contract through ChatGPT?
An AI tool will read the contract back to you with total confidence and no idea what is normal for a nurse practitioner. It will not tell you your real hourly rate, and it does not know that malpractice coverage and supervision rules work differently at a federally qualified health center than at a private practice. It also only answers the question you already know to ask, which is the exact thing you do not have yet. The kit gives you the questions.
Shouldn't I just hire a lawyer?
Often a good idea, and the kit now includes a full section on how to do it well: when a clause is actually worth a professional read, how to find someone who knows nurse practitioner contracts, how to vet them on a short call, and how to get more out of the review for less money. A lawyer reads for whether the contract is legal, not for whether the job is survivable; they will not tell you the salary is fine while your real hourly rate sits below what you made as an RN. Read it yourself first, walk in prepared, and the hour you pay for goes further.
I'm a new grad with no leverage. Is this still worth it?
Before you sign is the only moment you have any leverage at all. After your signature is on it, you have none. And even if you change nothing, walking in knowing exactly what you agreed to is worth the afternoon. You cannot un-sign a clause you did not understand.
I'm not a numbers person.
You do not have to be. The calculator does the arithmetic; you enter what it asks for. The field guide spells out what is normal, so you are never judging a clause from scratch.
You're not a lawyer. Why should I trust this?
Correct, and the kit says so plainly. This is information, not legal advice. It is the read an experienced colleague would walk you through, in cold numbers. NP to NP.
Will it apply to my state and setting?
It is built around primary care nurse practitioner offers and covers the settings they come from: private practice, hospital-employed, FQHC, and cash-pay wellness roles, with the malpractice coverage analysis for each. The clause ranges are general to nurse practitioner contracts, so you apply them to the specifics of your own offer.
What if it is just a hard first year and I am overthinking it?
That is a fair worry, and the right time to ask it is before you sign, not after. The kit has a section built for exactly this question, Normal Hard, or a Job That Will Not Get Better. It helps you tell a normal first-year ramp, which every new provider goes through, from a job that is set up to require far more than a real workweek, which no amount of getting faster will fix. You go in knowing which one you are looking at.
What if my offer turns out to be fine?
Then you sign knowing it is fine, which is a different thing than signing and hoping. That certainty is the product.
Is this a course?
No. It is a field guide, a set of tools, and a walkthrough video. You use it on your own offer; it is not a training program you sit through.
How do I get the kit after I buy?
It is delivered as log-in access to a private online portal. You will get your log-in the moment your purchase is complete, and the letters, the tools, and the videos are all inside, organized into tabs so you can go straight to the part you need.
